Try it with Docker Compose

This guide runs Day Planner and its database on your computer with Docker, so you can try it before deploying it anywhere.

You need Docker with Docker Compose, and openssl (included with macOS, Linux and Git for Windows).

Make an empty folder and download the Compose file and settings template into it.

Terminal window
mkdir day-planner && cd day-planner
curl -fsSLO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Deejpotter/day-planner/main/deploy/docker-compose.yml
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Deejpotter/day-planner/main/deploy/.env.example -o .env

You now have docker-compose.yml and .env in the folder.

Generate two secrets and set the URL you’ll open.

Terminal window
sed -i.bak "s|^POSTGRES_PASSWORD=.*|POSTGRES_PASSWORD=$(openssl rand -hex 16)|" .env
sed -i.bak "s|^BETTER_AUTH_SECRET=.*|BETTER_AUTH_SECRET=$(openssl rand -base64 32)|" .env
sed -i.bak "s|^BETTER_AUTH_URL=.*|BETTER_AUTH_URL=http://localhost:8303|" .env

Those are the only three required settings. The configuration reference lists the rest.

Terminal window
docker compose up -d
docker compose logs app | grep setup_token=

The first command starts the database and the app, and runs the database migrations. The second prints the one-time setup token.

Open http://localhost:8303. You’re sent to the setup page, which asks for the setup token, then your name, email, password and working hours. When you finish, you’re signed in as the admin.
